Urban Green Corridors

Across a growing number of cities, planners are threading narrow strips of vegetation — "green corridors" — between parks, rail lines, and residential blocks. Unlike a single large park, a corridor's value lies in its continuity: it lets pollinators, small mammals, and foot traffic move through a city rather than stopping at its edges.

Early advocates framed corridors mainly as an aesthetic amenity. Recent municipal data complicates that view. In three mid-sized cities that expanded corridor networks between 2015 and 2023, average summer surface temperatures along corridor-adjacent streets fell measurably relative to comparable streets without nearby vegetation, and pedestrian counts on those same streets rose during the same period.

Passage 2 of 2 — A Dissenting View

Not every planner is convinced the strategy scales. A corridor that is only a few meters wide, critics note, may be too narrow to support the interior-dependent species that drove much of the original ecological argument — the benefit may be almost entirely thermal and social, not ecological. Whether that distinction matters depends on which outcome a city is actually funding the corridor to produce.
